BUDDY ACE Jasmine 3167 Meets Al "TNT" Braggs ● CD $13.98 $9.98
Sides recorded in late 50s/ early 60by two soul music pioneers - 16 by Ace and 10 by Braggs.

JOHNNY ACE Jasmine 3206 The Complete Duke Recordings and More ● CD $13.98
24 tracks, 66 mins, highly recommended
The complete Duke recordings cut between 1952 and 1954 by this popular blues/ ballad singer from Memphis who died Christmas Eve 1954 while playing Russian Roulette. He was a fine piano player and an excellent singer and although he was a fine blues performer he achieved his biggest success with his rendition of tender and bluesy ballads including My Song/ The Clock/ Please Forgive Me and the classic Pledging My Love which rocketed up the charts following his untimely death and became his only crossover hit reaching #17 in the pop charts (it was #1 in the R&B charts). The more includes two tribute songs to Johnny and a remastered version of Pledging My Love that was issued in 1958. Includes informative notes by Austin Powell. (FS)

JIMMY CLANTON Acrobat 3385 The Jimmy Clanton Collection, 1957-1962 ● CD $16.98 $11.98
2 CDs, 62 tracks, 148 mins, Strongly Recommended
It's a trip to think about just how big an artist Jimmy Clanton was for a short time. I used to only know him for Venus In Blue Jeans, and for the "Go Johnny Go" movie from 1959, but he sold at least 4 million singles and starred in another movie with a bunch of Rockers in 1961: "Teenage Millionaire." I always watched "Go Johnny Go" for the other performers in it like Chuck Berry, Ritchie Valens, Jackie Wilson, etc., but over the years I have definitely developed more of an appreciation for Jimmy Clanton, especially his records that fall under the Swamp Pop banner. This expansive collection should delight the long time fans as well as recent converts like me. Set includes all the big hits: Just A Dream/ A Letter to an Angel/ A Part Of Me/ Ship on a Stormy Sea/ Go, Jimmy, Go/ Another Sleepless Night and Venus in Blue Jeans, plus many, many more classic tracks. Sound is excellent throughout both discs, and the CD booklet includes extensive liner notes and recording info. (JM)

SANFORD CLARK Bear Family BCD 17664 Sanford Clark Rocks! ● CD $19.98
31 tracks, strongly recommended
In depth survey of the recordings of this fine rocker and country singer who only managed to get one hit but it was a corker - The Fool in 1956. Almost all all the tunes were produced by Lee Hazelwood (who also wrote many of them) with the outstanding Al Casey on lead guitar. Most tunes cut in Phoenix and some in Hollywood including a few with Duane Eddy on rhythm guitar. Clark hit big with his first recording The Fool, originally on MCI and leased to Dot. He spent the rest of his career trying for a second hit. The tunes here, done between 1956-1967 for MCI, Dot, Trey, Project, Warner Bros and Ramco are often very good but success eluded Sanford. He was not the world's most compelling singer - he sounded like a cross between Ricky Nelson & Johnny Cash but there are some fine songs here like Lonesome For A Letter/ Usta Be My Baby/ A Cheat/ NIne Pound Hammer/ Ooh Baby/ Modern Romance/ Modern Romance/ Travelin' Man/ Just Bluesin' and others including an odd 1965 remake of The Fool produced by Waylon Jennings and Donnie Owens. It includes a few tracks that were not originally issued but, curiously, none of his excellent Jamie sides from 1958 and '59. Includes a 36 page booklet with detailed notes by Bill Dahl. An enjoyable collection. (FS)

EDDIE COCHRAN Rockstar RSRCD 026 Portrait Of A Legend ● CD $10.98
35 tracks, 79 mins, highly recommended
Rockstar Records found some copies of this long out of print release and are offering them at a bargain price. This is an expanded version of their 16 track LP of the same name from 1984 with 19 additional sides all drawn from the Liberty vaults including several items that have never been unearthed before though no new songs. Among the highlights are 12 tracks in stereo including a fabulous version of Cut Across Shorty with a more country feel. It also includes the master of this song (one of his best) at the original tempo (it was speeded up for single release). It includes the great bluesy instrumental Jam Sand-Witch, the British single version of Summertime Blues lacking added reverb and with the ending intact and the version of Somethin' Else is also minus the fade out. The disc also includes the undubbed version of Eddie's fine version of Ray Charles' Hallelujah, I Love Her So along with the stereo version of the version with string overdubs. Cochran helped spread the word about Ray on his European tours. The disc also includes the never before reissued backing tracks for My Way and Rock 'n' Roll Blues which are interesting but a bit redundant. As always with Eddie there are a few drab ballads (ballads were not his strong suit) but the majority of the set is fine and worthwhile even if you're not a Cochran fanatic. Sound is superb and the 8 page booklet includes detailed notes by Stu Coleman and some great photos including a priceless one of Eddie with Gene Vincent. (FS)

EDDIE COCHRAN & FRIENDS Fantastic Voyage 228 Gold Star Rockers ● CD $19.98 $11.98
Three CD set with 108 tracks featuring a selection of recordings with Eddie Cochran on guitar or by artists associated with Eddie. The notes in the 12 page booklet are a bit ambiguous but I think many of these were recorded at the famed Gold Star studios in Hollywood, California. Includes sides recorded between 1956 and '59 by Lee Denson (who helped Elvis learn to play guitar when he lived in Memphis), The Cochran Brothers (Eddie Cochran and Hank Cochran who were not related), Ray Stanley, Mamie Van Doren (singing was not her strong point), Jerry Capeheart, Skeets McDonald, Bo Davis, Baker Knight, Dosey BUrnette, Troyce Key, Gene Vincent (four songs including Git It which is one of my favorites of Gene with Eddie on guitar and vocal chorus) and many more. Lots of rarities plus some originally unissued recordings and demos.

BOB CROSBY & HIS ORCHESTR Acrobat 3373 All The HIts And More, 1935-1951 ● CD $16.98
Bob Crosby was the younger brother of Bing Crosby, and made his own way in the music business as a vocalist and bandleader, having a string of more than forty hits which spanned the era covered by this collection, especially as leader of his well-known band The Bob Cats and in later years as a solo singer. This 50-track 2-CD collection comprises all Bob Crosby's forty and more career hits, with his orchestra, with The Bob Cats and as solo singer and duettist, plus selected other noted A&B sides on Decca from this era. It features his No. 1 hits In A Gypsy Tearoom/ Whispers In The Dark and Day In, Day Out, and his other Top 3 hits Over The Rainbow/ Lilacs In The Rain/ With The Wind And The Rain In Your Hair and Down Argentina Way. Also included are famous jazz-focused pieces like South Rampart Street Parade/ Big Noise From Winnetka and March Of The Bob Cats and his theme tune Summertime along with hits with other classics from the era like Two Sleepy People/ Let It Snow!/ Goody Goody/ A Foggy Day and Play A Simple Melody. It features Crosby himself on vocals, with performances also by his featured vocalists Frank Tennille, Kay Weber, Eddie Miller, Marian Mann, Nappy Lamare, Helen Ward, Teddy Grace and Marion Morgan, plus vocal duets with Patty Andrews and Georgia Gibbs.

CLARENCE EDWARDS Wolf 120.635 Louisiana Swamp Blues Vol. 9 - Baton Rouge Downhome BLu ● CD $14.98
16 tracks, highly recommended
Louisiana performer Clarence Edwards was a terrific performer with a dark powerful voice and funky down home guitar style and his music recalls the heyday of Excello artists like Lightnin' Slim and Silas Hogan. These recordings were made between 1990 and 1993 by his producer at the time Steve Coleridge who produced Clarence's highly regarden first album "Swamp's The Word" (sadly, out of print). All tracks feature Clarence accompanied by Coleridge on bass and Ronnie Huston on drums with various additional musicians added on harmonica, guitar and violin - the latter is particularly effective. Many of the songs here are familiar down home blues songs from the repertoire of Fats Domino, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Guitar Slim and others (Every Night About This Time/ All Your Love/ Still A Fool/ Rocky Mountain Blues, etc) but Clarence's approach renders them fresh. NOthing fancy here, just solid down home blues. (FS)

RAMBLIN' JACK ELLIOT Acrobat 7174 100 Classic Recordings From The Early Years ● CD $24.98
Four CDs, 100 tracks, highly recommended
Ramblin' Jack Elliot is an important figure in the American folk music revival and this is a most welcome compilation of his early recordings. Born the son of a New York doctor he became entranced by cowboy music at an early age and traveled the country eventually meeting up with Woody Guthrie in the late 40s. Guthrie became a close friend and inspiration and Jack's music marks a transitional phase between Guthrie and some of the younger disciples like Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs. He is an excellent singer with a lovely melodic quality and a country twang that belies his urban upbringing. He is also a fine guitarist in both finger and flat pick style. He also occasionally plays harmonica on a harp rack. It features most of the titles from his albums for the Elektra, Topic, 77, Prestige & Columbia UK labels, "Bad Men And Heroes", "Woody Guthrie's Blues", "Jack Elliot Sings", "Jack Takes The Floor", "Ramblin' Jack Elliot In London", "Ramblin' Jack Elliott Sings Songs by Woody Guthrie and Jimmie Rodgers", "Jack Elliott Sings the Songs of Woody Guthrie", "Ramblin' Jack Elliot", "Jack Elliott at the Second Fret - Recorded Live" and "Country Style" The material is a mix of traditional songs, songs from the repertoire of Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Jimmie Rodgers, Gary Davis, Jessie Fuller, Red Foley, Jimmy Driftwood and others. It includes a version of Midnight Special by the City Ramblers Skiffle Group with Jack on vocals that was originally issued on an obscure Storyville EP in 1956. Sound quality is excellent and the 24 page booklet has informative notes by Paul Watts. (FS)

FRANKIE FORD Acrobat 4406 Sea Cruise - The Complete Releases, 1958-1962 ● CD $16.98
30 tracks, strongly recommended
Frankie Ford was one of the better white interpreters of rhythm & blues to emerge during the 1950s. Growing up in New Orleans in 1950s and playing in local clubs he got exposed to the great sound of New Orleans R&B which he absorbed. He made his Ace debut in 1958 with the fine R&B rocker Cheatin' Woman which he followed with his big hit novelty Sea Cruise and Roberta. Originally recorded by Huey Smith & The Clowns, Ace owner Johnny Vincent wasn't satisfied with Bobby Marchan's lead vocals and decided to "improve" it by erasing Marchan's vocals and having Ford singing to Smith's accompaniment and the result reached #11 in the R&B charts and #14 in the pop charts. His follow up, the catchy, Alimony, co-written by Frankie, was a minor pop hit and has been recorded by a number of New Orleans artists. His last for Johnny Vincent was a single issued on Vin as by Morgus & The Three Ghouls - one side featured Frankie with Mac Rebennac. In 1960 he switched to Imperial where he came under the guidance of Dave Bartholomew. His first Imperial release was a fine cover of Joe Jones You Talk Too Much which crept into the pop charts and he had another nimor pop hit with the pop ballad Seventeen. This collection features all his Ace, Vin and Imperial singles plus tracks from his Ace LP "Let's Take A Sea Cruise." His material is a mix of rockin' R&B, doo-wop styled ballads and straight ahead pop - the latter being pretty forgettable. (FS)

SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS Sunset Boulevard 7034 Because You're Mine ● CD $23.98
A varied collection by one of the wildest of R&B singers - 29 tracks on two CDs ranging from the early 50s to the mid 1970s. Includes three versions of his most famous song I Put A Spell On You - the first recording from 1955 (a year before his hit version), a 1973 remake and a live version. Includes sides from his earliest recordings with Tiny Grimes for Timely plus sessions for Mercury, Grand, Red Top, Enrica (the crazed I Hear Voices), Providence and other labels.

FLETCHER HENDERSON Acrobat 3468 The Golden Years, Hits and Classics, 1925-1937 ● CD $16.98
Fletcher Henderson was a jazz pianist, arranger, composer and bandleader who is regarded as one of the most influential figures of the early jazz and swing eras, bridging the gap between Dixieland, swing and the big band as one of the most prolific and innovative arrangers of his time, ranked by some critics on a par with Duke Ellington in terms of influence. During his heyday as a bandleader in the 1920s and '30s he had a string of big sellers and recorded definitive versions of some of the classics of those times. This 48-track 2-CD set comprises selected recordings with the various incarnations of his orchestra on the Vocalion, Columbia, Brunswick, Harmony and Bluebird labels during this era, before he largely turned his attention towards arranging, including a couple of recordings as The Dixie Stompers and The Baltimore Bellhops. It features all his 20 chart hits, including Sugar Foot Stomp/ Dinah/ Henderson Stomp/ Honeysuckle Rose/ King Porter Stomp/ It's The Talk Of The Town/ Until Today and many more. There are performances by Louis Armstrong, Buster Bailey, Don Redman, Tommy Ladnier, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, John Kirby, Henry 'Red' Allen, Dicky Wells, Horace Henderson, Edgar Sampson and many other notable musicians who passed through his ranks over the years.

ELMORE JAMES Sunset Boulevard 7947 The Sky Is Crying - The Ultimate Collection ● CD $31.98
Three CDS, 54 tracks, almost essential
I say "almost" since this set of recordings made for Bobby Robinson between 1959 and 1963 would have been complete and essential if it wern't missing several alternate takes and the completely different version of Look On Yonder Wall. Apart from that, this is the most comprehensive currently available set of these incredible recordings. There is no doubt in my mind that Elmore James was one of the greatest bluesmen to ever record - a powerful and intense singer and a masterful guitarist. His slide guitar techniques were to inspire and influence generations of blues guitarists though none had the skill, sensitivity or imagination Elmore brought to the instrument. His early death in 1963 at the age of 45 robbed the world of a major talent. In the 4 years prior to his death he was recorded quite extensively by New York producer Bobby Robinson for his Fire & Enjoy labels and these three CD presents most of these recordings in approximately chronological order. It includes his two last R&B chart hits - The Sky Is Crying and his update of Tampa Red's It Hurts Me Too which was issued two years after his death. He pays tribute to his mentor Robert Johnson with versions of Standing AT The Crossroads and Rambling On My Mind (called So Unkind) updated to the 1960s. There are incredibly intense blues ballads like I Need You and the phenominal five minute long Something Inside Me, both featuring some truly sublime slide guitar., the amazing stop time Done Somebody WrongRolling & Tumbling, two songs with lovely harmonica accompaniment by Sam Myers who is also featured singing two songs with Elmore on guitar and many more. There are also two songs by Marshall Jones who is probably Homesick James, who played bass on most of these sessions. Everything Elmore recorded was superb but I think these recordings are probably his best. If you don't already have these, what are you waiting for ? (FS)

LITTLE WILLIE JOHN Real Gone 046 Complete Hit Singles A's & B's** ● CD $24.98
2 CDs, 32 tracks, very highly recommended
There are other collections saluting the great unsung (no pun intended) Detroit R&B/ soul singer, but this is the first one to bring together all the A- and B-sides he cut for King Records between 1955 and 1961. So while we get the radio hits like All Around the World/ Fever/ Talk To Me, Talk To Me, and Leave My Kitten Alone, we also get smokin' flip sides like My Nerves/ Spasms/ Don't Be Ashamed to Call My Name, and I'm Shakin' too. Booklet includes notes by BIll Dahl and rare photos from the King archive. All and all, this is the best non-Import Little Willie John currently available, and these wondrous tracks belong in the home of every R&B and soul collector. (GMC)

THE JUBALAIRES Heritage 48 The Singing Waiters, 1947-1948 ● CD $16.98 $11.98
25 tracks, 52 mins, highly recommended
Excellent quartet from the 40s who performed both sacred and secular material though the majority of the material here is sacred. The group has a complicated history which is elaborated upon in the 12 page booklet by compiler Opal Louis Nations. This set features previously unissued radio transcriptions from 1947 & '48. Featuring the fine lead of William Johnson they perform 19 gospel songs and 6 secular pieces sung acapella or accompanied by Jimmie O'Brien on piano. The material is performed in fine jubilee style inspired by the Golden Gate Singers but with a harder, more contemporary, edge on some of the tracks like You Better Run and When The Moon Goes Down. Titles include John Saw The Number/ Ezekiel/ I Declare This World Is In A Bad Condition/ Wade In the Water/ Dese Bones Gwine Rise Again/ My Father's Rich/ Old Lamb/ Live A-Humble/ My Trouble Is Hard/ Jube's Blues/ Casey Jones (with some nice boogie piano from O'Brien)/ Long, Lean & Lanky and others. Sound quality is superb. (FS)

ALBERT KING Stax 8546 Blues At Sunrise** ● CD $12.98
7 tracks, very highly recommended
Those relentless vault-probers at Fantasy Records have provided us with a newly discovered (as of 1990) live tape from the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival, and it is amazing. Aside from the previously issued For The Love Of A Woman this disc is an all killer, no filler, King-sized thriller. Potent vocals throughout, and when he makes that guitar talk you better hold on to your beret and listen up good. Nobody wrings as much emotion out of an amplified wire, and on this day he was ON, boy; we're talkin' about slash and burn playing with a level of inventive genius that other recordings only hint at.And the band is exquisitely attuned to Albert's singing and playing. The recording (by Swiss radio engineers) is less than perfect but who cares - this music is the real deal and the ticket is a steal. (MB)
ALBERT KING: Blues At Sunrise/ Don't Burn Down The Bridge/ For The Love Of A Woman/ I Believe To My Soul/ I'll Play The Blues For You/ Little Brother (Make A Way)/ Roadhouse Blues

BROTHER JOE MAY Acrobat 7173 Singles, Album Tracks and Live Recordings, 1949-1962 ● CD $24.98
Four CDs, 83 tracks, very highly recommended
What a nice surprise - an extensive overview of the recordings of the superb solo gospel vocalist Brother Joe May. Though little heard today, he was one of the most popular and influential gospel singers of the 1950s and 60s. He was born in Macon, Mississippi in 1912 and starteed singing at an early age. He was a member of a Church Of God denominations where all male members are referred to as Brother. He was influenced by the singing of Mahalia Jackson and Bessie Smith and he in turn, influenced singers like Little Richard. He started recording for Specialty in 1949 where he stayed for five years and after an hiatus he joined Nashboro in 1958. This superb collection features a selection of Specialty and Nashboro singles, tracks from Nashboro LPs and live recordings cut between 1951 and 1955. Joe was a powerful and expressive vocalist who, like his influence Mahalia Jackson, was able to invoke a great intensity without having to resort to histrionics. His material is a mix of traditional gospel, old favorites and newer songs, including several originals. Arrangements are basic with piano or organ (sometimes both) and rhythm section. In addition to his solo sides there are four stupendous duets with Wynona Carr and there are also tracks with The Sallie Martin Singers and The Pilgrim Travelers. Sound quality on the live sides is a bit rough but features some great performances and are quite listenable. Overall sound quality is excellent and the 16 page booklet has informative notes by Paul Watts. (FS)

FRANK MOTLEY & HIS CREW Jasmine 3247 Go Man Go! ● CD $13.98
33 tracks, strongly recommended
Frank Motley was a famous R&B and Jazz trumpeter and bandleader, who recorded prolifically throughout the 1950s and was known for his his ability to play two trumpets simultaneously, which earned him the nickname 'Dual Trumpeter' Motley. They recorded extensively for Washington-based DC Records from 1951, who licensed many of their recordings to other labels like Gotham, Specialty, RCA, Big Town, Hollywood and Gem. The Gotham sides were reissued by Flyright many years ago and those are not included here. This set includes sides issued as singles on Specialty, Gem, Big Town, Hollywood and DC and a whole heap of sides from the DC vaults that ended up on budget label LPs on Grand Prix and Design. Apart from singer and pianist Curley Bridges and vocalist Elsie "Angel Face" Kenley most of the band members are unknowns but if you like solid sax honking, blaring trumpets and hard driving rhythm sections you won't be disappointed. About one third of the tracks are vocals - a mix of blues, R&B and doowop. Bridges is a fine vocalist and his sides include a supercharged version of Hound Dog with composer credit to Motley! The rest of the tracks are mostly hard driving R&B instrumentals and on several you can hear Motley doing his dual trumpet routine. Very entertaining. (FS)

LES PAUL & FRIENDS Fantastic Voyage 035 How High The Moon - Hits & Rarities From The Wizard Of ● CD $19.98 $14.98
3 CD set with 76 tracks. What more is there to said about Les Paul? The man who has influenced countless musicians for decades, needs no introduction for guitar aficionados. JOHNNY SHINES Omni 328 The Blues Came Falling Down - Live 1973 ● CD $16.98 $11.98
20 tracks, 80 mins, strongly recommended
A previously unissued live set from 1973 by the great Johnny Shines recorded in St. Louis. Johnny is in fine form on a selection of original songs, blues standards and, of course, some Robert Johnson songs accompanying himself on acoustic guitar on most cuts plus a few with a steel bodied National which are particularly nice. On three tracks he is joined by Leroy Jody Pierson providing some tasteful second guitar work. A number of cuts feature Johnny's excellent slide guitar playing and while this is not among Johnny's more exciting releases, is ceratinly worth a listen. Songs include Big Boy Boogie/ Kind Hearted Woman Blues/ Stand By Me/ Someday Baby Blues/ Sweet Home Chicago/ Tell Me Mama/ How You Want Your Rollin' Done, etc. (FS)

AL SMITH Jasmine 3234 In Session, 1952-1958 - Foolin' Around Slowly ● CD $13.98

THE STANLEY BROTHERS Revenant 203 Earliest Recordings** ● CD $14.98
14 tracks, 35 minutes, highly recommended
We've turned up a few copies of this long out of print set featuring the earliest recordings (1947-1952) by possibly the greatest of all bluegrass groups. Ten songs date from the brothers' 1947-48 sessions; two showcase tenor singer/ mandolinist Pee Wee Lambert. After three years on Columbia, the Stanleys briefly returned to Rich-R-Tone in 1952, recording four songs that anticipated the classic Mercury sides to follow. This release shuffles songs from both Rich-R-Tone periods and while the remastering isn't exceptional it's wonderful to hear these rare and iconic recordings in their entirety. Handsomely packaged in a fold out digipack it comes with a 20 page booklet with detailed notes by bluegrass expert Gary Reid along with some great photos and full discographical info.(FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Airline 57817 The Jewel/ Paula Rock Story ● CD $18.98 $10.98
2 CD, 36 tracks, highly recommended
Back in 2012, Fuel Records issued a collection called The Jewel/Paula Soul Story (Fuel 61897) which focused on the R&B output of Stan Lewis' family of labels, Jewel, Paula, and Ronn. Now, three years later, we have a sister release that concentrates on the rock and pop artists that recorded for those labels; it's not a little ironic that a label renowned for its' stellar R&B sides should have had its' biggest hit with a pop/rock throwaway, Judy in Disguise (With Glasses), which reached Number One on the pop charts in 1968 for John Fred & His Playboy Band. That song is here in all its pseudo-psychedelic glory, along with the follow-up, Hey Hey Bunny, and the garage band-y Outta My Head and Boogie Children which presents Fred & the Playboys at their greasy best. In fact, it can be said that many of these songs, released roughly between 1964 and 1969, do sound like they came straight from the garage. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially when there's some actual talent involved, e.g. Bobby Charles' revved up remake of Jimmy McCracklin's 1958 hit The Walk, Mickey Gilley's boogie version of Little Walter's My Babe, and Charlie Daniels' (yes, that Charlie Daniels, of "Devil Went Down to Georgia" fame) quietly intense The Middle of a Heartache. It's not all Beatles/ Stones/ Animals/ Yardbirds wannabes-Tom & the Cats (The Wine Song), The Uniques (You Ain't Tuff), The Chaps (Forget Me), and The Bad Boys (Love), for example; there's also some rockabilly from Ed Forsyth, a dance track or two (The Five Jets' The Shake, The Boogie Kings' Philly Walk), blue-eyed soul (The Bad Habits' version of Delaney and Bonnie's It's Been a Long Time Coming), and teen pop (Goodbye Sue from Eddie Powers, who sounds uncannily like Elvis Costello). Heck, there's even a riotous cover of Jimi Henrdrix's Fire from Five By Five that needs to be heard to be believed. In short, there's nearly something for everyone, and this set gives a fairly accurate picture of mid-60s pop/ rock from an indie label perspective. (GMC)
5 X 5: Shake a Tail Feather/ THE BAD BOYS: Black Olives/ Love/ THE BAD HABITS: It's Been a Long Time Coming/ THE BOOGIE KINGS: Bony Moronie/ I've Got Your Number/ Philly Walk/ THE CHAPS: Forget Me/ Tell Me/ You'll Be Back/ BOBBY CHARLES: The Walk/ CHARLEY DANIELS & THE JAGUARS: The Middle of a Heartache/ DANNY & JERRY: Mo'reen/ We've Got a Groovey Thing Goin'/ FIVE BY FIVE: Fire/ She Digs My Love/ THE FIVE JETS: Sugaree/ The Shake/ ED FORSYTH: Baby What's Wrong/ Come on Everybody/ JOHN FRED & HIS PLAYBOY BAND: Hey, Hey, Bunny/ Judy in Disguise/ JOHN FRED AND THE PLAYBOYS: Outta My Head/ MICKEY GILLEY: My Babe/ THE IN-CROWD: In the Midnight Hour/ THE PLAYBOYS: Boogie Children/ EDDIE POWERS: Goodbye Sue/ THE SPECTRES: I Cried/ SKIP STEWART: Sweet Little Rock & Roller/ TOM & THE CATS: Good Good Lovin'/ Summertime Blues/ The Wine Song/ THE UNIQUES: Goodbye So Long/ Not Too Long Ago/ Sha-La Love/ You Ain't Tuff

VARIOUS ARTISTS Bear Family BCD 17576 The Right To Rock - The Mexicano & Chicano Rock 'n' Roll** ● CD $19.98
37 tracks, 79 mins, highly recommended
You can probably guess by the title what to expect, lots of great early Rock & Roll by Hispanic artists, most in English, some in Spanish, plus lots of unique touches like Maybelline with accordion! There are a few familiar tracks like Chan Romero's - The Hippy Hippy Shake, Eddie Quinteros' - Lindy Lou, and a couple Ritchie Valens classics, plus a some rare tracks from artists ealy in their career like Freddy Fender, but by and large the tracks here were unfamiliar to me, so there are a lot of gems that I heard for the first time, and the definitely inspired me to seek out more from these acts. Highlights for me include: Los Gibson Boys - Rock De La Noche (Good Rockin' Tonight), Pico Pete doing his best Little Richard on Chicken Little, the fantastic Los Xochimilcas with Rock Rollin' Rock, Danny Boy (aka Chuck Rio) - Don't Go Pretty Baby, Los Gibson Boys - El Vampiro, Eddie Quinteros with some blistering guitar on Slow Down Sandy, and many more. You also get a mystery Sun records demo by an unknown artist - Mexican Rock'n'Roll. Lastly, R.I.P. Trini Lopez (damn Covid) who's The Right To Rock (his debut single as a solo artist from 1958), lays out the legal precedent for all of our Rockin' rights! All in all a fantastic release, with deep liner notes as well. (JM)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Buda 860225 Treasures Of Algiers: Chaabi** ● CD $16.98
15 tracks, highly recommended
Lovely and very varied collection of Chaabi music from Algiers - the capital of Algeria. Like rembetika and fado this music emerged from the underprivileged class - in this case in the early years of the 20th century from residents of the walled enclave of the Kasbah. The music features mournful Arab styled vocals along with elements of Berber Andalusian music and the vocalists are accompanied by various sized groups ranging from a couple of musicians to a dozen or more and includes traditional and western instruments - violin, santur, mandole (an instrument resembling an elongated mandolin with eight, ten or twelve strings), piano, percussion and more. The Algerian Jewish community was very active in the dissemination of the music. In the 1950s and 60s the music spread beyond the walls of the Kasbah and the style was adopted throughout other regions of the middle east. The songs are usually based on poetry and frequently deal with the vicissitudes of daily life. The music here is exciting and haunting at the same time. Unfortunately the booklet, which gives a nice history of the music, tells us nothing about the artists or the recordings and an internet search was unproductive. I'm guessing they are from the 70 and 80s but they are all very fine and very accesible to western ears. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Doctor Bird 081 The Best of Reggae - Expanded Original Edition ● CD $16.98 $12.98
Two CDs, 55 tracks, strongly recommended
This is an expanded version of the 30 track double LP originally issued by K-Tel in 1973 and advertised on British TV. It featured some of the most popular reggae songs issued in the U.K. between 1968 and 1973 on the Trojan label. This reissue drops the tracks by JImmy Cliff and Toots & The Maytals (presumably for copyright reasons) but has added 28 tracks from the same period. Since the original set was intended to reach as wide an audience as possible there is an emphasis on some of the more pop flavored titles like Young GIfted and Black by Bob & Marcia, Moon River by Greyhound and Love of The Common People by Nicky Thomas, but there are also plenty with a more authentic sound like Israelites and It Miek by Desmond Dekker, 54-46 That's My Number by The Maytals. The 28 bonus cuts includes a number of artists not featured on the original album like Teddy Brown, John Holt, Owen Gray, The Ethiopians, The Melodians and others. Overall, a bit of a mixed bag, but with many superb performances. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS El ACMEM 363 Ban The Bomb - Songs of The Aldermaston Anti-Nuclear Ma ● CD $21.98 $16.98
Two CD set, 52 tracks, recommended
A powerful selection of songs and music associated with the marches in England in the late 50s and 60s opposing the decision by the British government to become the third country to develop nuclear weapons. This led to the formation of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), a group headed by Anglican priest John Collins and the philosopher Bertrand Russell. Attracting support from across a broad spectrum of the public, a march was organised from London to the atomic weapons plant near the village of Aldermaston in Berkshire, a peaceful protest involving people of all ages; united in their horror at finding themselves living in the shadow of the bomb and in their fear for the future of mankind. So, from Trafalgar Square on Good Friday 1958, in dismal weather, they marched to a soundtrack of folk songs and jazz; the protest songs of Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, Fred and Betty Dallas and John Brunner, complemented by the revivalist New Orleans style of Ken Colyer's Omega Brass Band and standards popularized by such British jazz giants of the era as Chris Barber, Ottilie Patterson, Humphrey Lyttelton, Kenny Ball and Acker Bilk. Though this collection tends to be far too heavily weighted towards trad jazz there are also a selection of powerful folk songs (some based on traditional songs) on the first disc as well as brief interview with the great philosopher Bertrand Russell. Includes a 36 page booklet with a detailed history of the anti nuclear movement in Britain including photos of some of the participants and the musicians, posters for the marches, album covers and more. There were certainly many more folk songs associated then are presented here and if they had included more of them I would have given this a higher rating. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 097 The Quiller Memorandum, Vol. 1 ● CD $15.98 $9.98
25 tracks, 57 mins, highly recommended
This is a wonderful collection dedicated to the legendary songwriting team of Felice & Boudleaux Bryant. Although most famous for their songs performed by the Everly Brothers -- Wake Up Little Susie/ Love Hurts/ Bye, Bye, Love/ All I Have to Do Is Dream/ Bird Dog, etc.--many artists made great records with the Bryants' compositions. On this CD we get a lot of the early recordings done with their songs, so you get the Everly's doing .Susie, and Nashville Blues, Rusty & Doug (Kershaw) with "the rambunctious Hey Sheriff, Wanda Jackson doing the confusingly Calypso Don'a Wan'a, Sammy Salvo with Wolf Boy, Webb Pierce with Bye, Bye Love, Roy Orbison with Jolie, Buddy Holly's heartbreaking Raining In The Heart, and many more outstanding tracks from the likes of Porter Wagoner, Bob Luman, Billy Grammer, The Browns, etc. So essentially a whole lot of great songs, many that were big hits, others that were just about as great, but aren't as well known. All pretty essential stuff and the people who put this out did a great job with it, with thorough liner notes and fantastic sound. (JM)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 121 Jazz Noire - Darktown Sleaze From The Mean Streets Of ● CD $17.98 $13.98
2 CDs, 50 tracks, 152 mins, very highly recommended
I've been dying for a collection like this for a long time; one full of great Jazz themes to 1940's and '50s Noir films and cool Jazz & R&B that the great characters in those movies would have hypothetically been listening to while they did their sordid deeds. You get big brassy horns backing big brassy dames, cool cats singing about shady deals, tracks that are so smoky they make your eyes water, so cool you need to put on a sweater. The highlights are far too many to mention, but some of my favorites include: Johnny Otis - Harlem Nocturne, Jimmy Witherspoon - Skid Row Blues, Amos Milburn - Money Hustlin' Woman, Baron Mingus & His Octet - This Subdues My Passion, themes from "The Killers," "Double Indemnity," and "High Sierra," plus Charlie Parker, Billy Holliday, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynonnie Harris, T-bone Walker, Percy Mayfield, Julia Lee, etc., etc. Cool Noir packaging, deep notes, this is pretty much the perfect stocking stuffer for any street hood, gun moll, crooked cop, or doomed lavers that might be on your naughty list this year. VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 131 Heavy Sugar - Second Spoonful: More Pure Essence Of New ● CD $19.98 $11.98
3CD, 75 tracks, very highly recommended
The follow up volume to the first "Heavy Sugar" compilation (not available), dishes up more tasty slabs of Nawlins R&B from the likes of Little Richard (the movie soundtrack version of "The Girl Can't Help It", oh yeah), Huey "Piano" Smith, Frankie Ford, Lee Allen, Bobby Charles, Charles Brown, Fats Domino, Wynona Carr, Professor Longhair, Smiley Lewis, Bobby Marchan, Amos Milburn, and more. As usual with these collections, the discs are given names: disc one is "cat walk", disc two is "shake shake", and disc three is "top notch grade A"; each name refers to a song on the disc and gives a general idea of what to expect, but don't let any abstract thought get in the way of enjoying some prime cuts. This set digs deeper into the talent from obscure labels like Rustone, Pontchartrain, Athens, Winner, and Spinett, resulting in tracks like Preacher's Daughter from Roland Stone, Alonzo Stewart's I Get the Blues When It Rains, Willie West's A Man Like Me, Top Notch Grade A by Al Reed, and Chris Kenner's Don't Make No Noise which he cut for Pontchartrain after leaving Imperial. The tracks date from 1954 to 1960 (except for Roy Brown's 1947 recording of Good Rocking Tonight, which the compilers kindly included to illustrate the roots of rock 'n' roll), the first golden age of R&B (in my humble opinion), and the songs collected here do not disappoint. If you have the first Heavy Sugar, you owe it to yourself to get this second helping, and if you don't have either, then now is a good time for catching up. (GMC)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 140 Jamaica Presents Jump Blues Strictly For You ● CD $19.98 $10.98
3 CDs, 85 tracks, 230 mins, highly recommended
I have no idea what Jamaica was really like in the 1940's through the 1960's, but it definitely has a legendary standing of being a time and place of amazingly good musical tastes. The Jamaican listening public embraced sublime hits like When You Dance by The Turbans, I Got Loaded by Peppermint Harris, Since I Met You Baby by Ivory Joe Hunter, Let The Good Times Roll by Shirley & Lee, etc. They also had a knack for rooting out artists' hidden gems that we Americans undervalued, like Goin' Home by Fats Domino (a huge influence on Jamaican music,) Messy Bessy by Louis Jordon, Rock & Cry by Clyde McPhatter, and so on. Then also appreciating obscure songs by obscure artists like Country Woman by Boo Breeding, All That Oil In Texas by Oscar McLollie, and Give It Up (Or Tell Me Where It Is) by Vince Monroe. These and many, many more great tunes can be found on this superb collection, which also features great sound and interesting notes. All goes to show that they really knew their stuff down there in Jamaica; must have been something in the water (or possibly in the air.) (JM)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 160 She's So Fine - The Rise Of The Girl Groups ● CD $19.98 $11.98
3 CDs, 95 tracks, very highly recommended
This latest collection from the gang at Fantastic Voyage manages to spotlight nearly every important 60's girl group (exceptions: the Shangri-Las, and the Ronettes) over three CDs. We get the seminal girl groups (The Chantels, the Hearts), the hitmakers (the Shirelles, the Crystals), Motown's contribution (the Marvelettes, the Supremes), solo artists working in the style (Claudine Clark, Dee Dee Sharp, Little Eva, Shelley Fabres), glorious one-shots (the Ikettes, the Blue-Belles), and second line acts (The Exciters, The Cookies, The Paris Sisters). There are also some questionable inclusions - Etta James, Bettye LaVette - that don't really qualify as "girl group" records. But for every stone cold classic (Little Eva's The Loco-Motion, The Shirelles' Will You Love Me Tomorrow) there's several great obscurities (The Donays' Devil in His Heart, The Blossoms' Son-in-Law) and lesser known tracks by the headliners (The Shirelles' Everybody Needs a Lover for example) that make this package a treat for fans of unassuming pop music. VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 165 After Sun - What The Stars Of The Sun Label Did Next ● CD $19.98 $11.98
3 CDs, 97 tracks, 239 mins, highly recommended
There is no greater roster of talent than the roll call of names that recorded for Sam Phillips in the 1950s. There's Blues giants B.B. King, Howlin Wolf, Ike Turner, Little Milton, Rufus Thomas, etc., and there the Rockabilly kings Elvis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash, but all of those big names are only half of the story, and the story didn't end after they recorded at 706 Union Ave. While there have been literally dozens of box sets and hundreds of compilations to scour the vaults of the Sun Record Company, there have been few releases to take this angle on the story, and none in my experience that have handled it so well. You get interesting, less compiled tracks from the big names, plus lots of great tracks like Jeff Daniels - Switch Blade Sam, Howard Chandler - Wampus Cat, Doctor Ross - Numbers Blues, (Harmonica) Frank Floyd - Rock A Little Baby, Scotty Moore Trio - Have Guitar Will Travel, and many, many more great tracks. A few of the artists that you would expect to be on this--Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich and a few others--aren't here and, even after reading the explanation in the liner notes, I'm not sure why. Otherwise, a fantastic collection. Includes 20 page booklet with notes and discographical information on all the tracks here. (JM)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 197 Breezy Sugar - The Pure Essence Of Chicago Rock & Roll ● CD $19.98 $11.98
3CD, 75 tracks, highly recommended
Two years after the last installment, Fantastic Voyage is back with another entry into the "Sugar" series of CDs ("Heavy Sugar," "Snazzy Sugar," "Savvy Sugar," etc. $21.98 each), with this one shining the spotlight on Chicago rock & roll and R&B. Compiler Stuart Colman, includes gems from the famous and not-so-famous movers and shakers from the 50's and early 60's to create an accurate picture of music from the Windy City. Naturally, Chess-the dominant force in Chicago R&B at the time-is prominently represented, but there's also room for other players-both major and minor-such as Vee-Jay, Mercury, Dot, Falcon, Cobra, Oriole, and Chief to name a few. As always, the discs are given outlandish sub-titles that may or may not describe the artists and music included therein: South Side Symphonies, Chi-Town Champs, and Urban Untouchables. But it doesn't matter, because the music speaks for itself, whether it come from old pros Chuck Berry, Dale Hawkins, Bo Diddley, or Ike Turner or from who-are-they's The Brothers, The Mark IV, Louis Hobbs, and Jerry Jaye. Make no mistake, this is another superb entry into the series, and the two-year break between releases has done nothing to dull Colman's impeccable taste in picking tracks for compiling. (GMC)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 202 It Takes Two - Dynamic Duos Of The Rock & Roll Era ● CD $19.98 $11.98
3 CD, 75 tracks, highly recommended
Since the beginning of the Rock & Roll era, duos have been firm fixture in the genre-which makes sense, since the roots of Rock & Roll (country, blues, pre- and post- war pop) always highlighted more than a few duos. This three disc collection of duos is interesting because it is compiled from a British point-of-view (by a British label, of course); consequently, a few of the duos in question are U.K. and European bred and may or may not be well known to us colonials. Sure, names like Joy & Dave, Ping Ping & Al Verlane, and Nina & Frederik might be lost on us, but that doesn't make their offerings any less interesting. The compilers also managed to dig up some obscure American acts as well; for every Everly Brothers, Jan & Dean, Mickey & Sylvia, Shirley & Lee, and Ferrante & Teicher (!), there's an Eddy & Teddy, Chuck & Betty, The Duals, and Cornbread & Jerry. So, a varied collection with some pop, country, R&B, and rock 'n' roll is what has been presented to us to enjoy. And one can certainly enjoy cuts like Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford's I'm Coming Home to Stay, The Kalin Twin's Sweet Sugar Lips, Gene & Eunice's This is My Story, and Travis & Bob's Baby Stay Close to Me. For historians, there's early tracks from future stars Skip Batten (later of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers), Doug Kershaw, Simon & Garfunkel (as Tom & Jerry), and the Addrisi Brothers. In short, there's much to savor and discover here so have at it! (GMC)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 204 Hoosier Daddy: Mar-Vel And The Birth Of Indiana Rockabilly ● CD $19.98 $13.98
3 CDs, 105 tracks, 236 mins, highly recommended Like most birth of Rockabilly compilations, this one starts out by giving you a healthy dose of Country Western Swing and Boogie. That's not a bad thing at all in this case because the pre-Rockabilly stuff here is by and large fantastic. Fine Country cuts by the likes of Bob Burton, Eddy Star, Sherry Lee, and a number of other artists that you probably haven't heard of, but will quickly earn your admiration. The Rockabilly doesn't start firing on all cylinders til about _ through the first CD with Herbie Duncan's rollicking Hot Lips Baby. Once it's started though, things heat up quick and soon you are getting barnburners like Little Angel also by Herbie Duncan, Saturday Night Special by Jack Bradshaw, Jerry Seifert Dirty White Bucks (And Tight Pegged Pants) which has a drum beat that gives Wipe Out a run for its money, and Moon Twist by Billy Nix. Billy Nix is actually one of the real stand-out artists on this collection, with no less than five great tracks. Other stand- outs include The Gaye Sisters who fall somewhere between the Collins Kids and The Everly Brothers, Chuck Dallis who has a handful of great cuts as well and who amazingly sounds like The Blasters on a couple of them, and Bill Sherrell who delivered fantastic cuts like Yes, No, Or Maybe, Rock On Baby, and probably the best known track on this collection Cadillac Baby. Then there's Ronnie Haig, Webb Foley, Tommy Lam, The Blankenship Brothers, Keetie & The Kats, The Jiants, and many more, who all deliver excellent tracks. Deep liner notes tell the story of the great Harry Glenn the main man behind Mar-Vel (and was a one man promotion machine on par with Stan Lee from that other Marvel,) as well as many of the artists featured. VARIOUS ARTISTS Fantastic Voyage 221 Jamaica - Is The Place To Go ● CD $17.98 $10.98
Two CDs, 48 mins, very highly recommended
Wonderful collection of Jamaican mento music recorded in the 1950s. Starting as a rural dance music using banjo, guitar, fife, maracs and "rumba box" ((a form of bass thumb piano)) mento eventually moved to the cities adding violin, clarinet, saxophone and featured lyrics often humorously commenting on everyday life, sex and cautionary tales. It bears a resemblance to Trinidadian calypso and both islands borrowed songs from each other though mento has a different feel. Ironically, the "craze" for Trinidadian calypso started with a couple of recordings made by Harry Belafonte singing a couple of mento songs and subsequently mento performers often called their groups Calypso bands. Although Trinidadian calypso had been recorded since 1912, it wasn't until 1950 that the first recordings were made of Jamican in London for the Melodisc label. Jamaican entrepreneur Stanley Motta built the first recording studio in Jamaica in the back room of a woodwork factory in 1951 and was shortly followed by Ivan Chin, Ken Khouri and Edward Seaga and over the next half a dozen years several hundred recordings were issued but by the end of the decade the interest in mento was almost non-existent - most young Jamaicans wanted to hear American rhythm & blues which they began to emulate subsequently leading to ska which included some elements of mento. This collection features irresistible performances from the likes of Lord Tanamo & Charlie Binger's Six, Lord Foodoos & His Calypso Band, Count Sticky & His Calypsonians (two great sides - one with an atypical steel guitar solo), Lord Flea & His Calypsonians (the risque Naughty LIttle Flea), Count Owen & His Calypsonians, Trenton Spence Quartet, Laurel Aitken (who was subsequently to become a major figure in ska music), Bertie King with Ernest Raglin, Count Zebra & The Seasiders and many more. Sound quality is generally excellent though some tracks were primitively recordeded and there is a 16 page full color booklet with background information as well as information on the artists and labels along with artist photos, label shots and album covers. VARIOUS ARTISTS Kent CDKEND 485 Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures, Vol. 5** ● CD $17.98
25 tracks, very highly recommended
David Godin was a fan of black American music from the mid 50s on, eventually turning his love of the music into becoming a writer, record company advisor, record shop owner and, for a short while, owner of his own label issuing soul music. He is credited with creating term "deep soul" - referring to soul music with a particular emotional intensity. In 1995 he compiled a collection of deep soul recordings for Ace Records Kent subsidiary - "Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures" (Kent 143 - $16.98). Over the next nine years he compiled three further volumes (Kent 158, 200 and 230) - the fourth volume being issued shortly before Dave's death in 2004. Working from lists that Dave had put together, Ace have taken their time in working at getting the rights to some of the records that Dave had most wanted to use and have come up with this fifth volume ranging from The Chantels 1958 recording of Every Night (I Pray), their gorgeous followup to Maybe to Esther Phillips' 1972 recording of the grim Home Is Where The Hatred Is and including Judy White's ferocious Satisfaction Guaranteed, Don't Pass Me By by Big Maybelle which was one of Dave's all time favorites, The Soul City's fabulous cover of Gladys Knight's Who KNows and more graet sides by Helena Ferguson, The Masqueraders, The Emotions, George Jackson, Betty Harris, Jerry Washington, Zilla Mays and others. The 32 page booklet includes an interview of Dave conducted between 1995 and '97 and notes on each of the tracks by noted soul music authorities. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Koko-Mojo 123 Koko-Mojo Diner, Vol. 1 - Soul Food** ● CD $12.98
28 tracks, highly recommended
A delectable collection of blues and R&B songs and tunes based around the subject of food - particularly the kind of food popular with African-Americans - soul food. The Mighty Cravers give us a run down of some popular soul food items in Soul Food, The Five Royales present us a plate of Monkey Hips and Rice, Shorty Long seems to like Burnt Toast and Coffee and Fats Domino is down in his home state of Louisiana with a bowl of Jambalay. A number of tracks use food as a handy title for an instrumental as with Freddy King's Onion Rings and Edgar Hayes' Fat Meat and Greens. And in some cases food is a metaphor (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) as in Lil Johnson's Sam The Hot Dog Man and The Four Clefs with I Like Pie, I Like Cake and lots more to savor and the set ends with a track which is neither blues nor R&B with Jim Bakkus and Friend with their decidedly raunchy Delicious (The Laughing Song). Notes in the fold out digipack discuss the history of food in African-American culture. Lots of tasty fun and this is the first in a series of four so prepare your dining room. (FS)

Includes brief notes for each song.

VARIOUS ARTISTS Koko-Mojo 139 Rhythm & Western, Vol. 2: Your Cheatin' Heart ● CD $12.98 $8.98
28 tracks, 74 tracks, strongly recommended
Is the concept for this compilation kinda confused? Yes it is. Is it still full of fantastic music? Yes it is. There are covers of Country songs here: Clyde McPhatter - I'm Movin' On, Damita Jo - Jambalaya (On The Bayou), Hank Ballard & The Midnighters - Excuse Me (I've Got A Heartache), Bobby Hebb - Night Train To Memphis, Ray Charles - It Makes No Difference Now, etc. There are songs that are kinda Country like Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm - Going Home, Billy Bland - Uncle Bud, and Little Mack - Let Hootenanny Blues (Out Of Jail). Then there are songs that are good, but I don't see having much of anything to do with Country music like Lou Rawls - If He Holds Your Hand, The Soul Stirrers - Wade In The Water, and The Lovers - I Wanna Be Loved. So, a mixed bag and all, but plenty of good listening. (JM)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Smithsonian Folkways 40260 Playing For The Man at The Door ● CD $74.98
Due, beginning of August.
After many years of speculation we finally get to hear some of the field recordings made by legendary and idiosyncratic blues researcher Mack McCormick. From the late 50s through the 1990s McCormick was an avid researcher into Texas blues and also into the life and death of Robert Johnson. He interviewed hundreds of people and recorded dozens of musicians. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, he rarely published anything and was secretive about his findings and only a handful of his recordings were ever released. After his death in 2015 his archive was acquired by The Smithsonian who spent several year sorting and organ zing the vast quantity of material and his documents and photos are now available to researchers and the Smithsonian's record label Smithsonian Folkways will be releasing his recordings starting with this deluxe three CD box set featuring 66 recordings accompanied by a 128-page book, which contains breathtaking photographs by McCormick and his associates, as well as contextual essays by producers Jeff Place and John Troutman on McCormick's life, and by musicians Mark Puryear and Dom Flemons on some of the marginalized communities throughout "Greater Texas" to which McCormick devoted his life's work. It includes two well known artists whose careers McCormick helped with - Lightnin' Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb, along with many lesser known artists - mostly blues but also including gospel, ragtime, zydeco and more from artists such as Robert Shaw, Cedell Davis, "Buster" Pickens, James Tisdom, Otis Cook, Grey Ghost, Jealous James Stanchell and many more including the remarkable George "Bongo Joe" Coleman whose music is unclassifiable. This will probably be THE release of 2023.

VARIOUS ARTISTS Specialty 7069 Golden Age Gospel Quartets, Vol 1 : 1947-1954 ● CD $15.98 $10.98
26 tracks, 78 minutes, essential
With 25 never-before-issued cuts, mostly alternate takes, gospel fans will know what to expect from these groups that recorded for Art Rupe's Specialty Records. The Swan Silvertones' I'm Coming Home (take 1) contains one of Claude A. Jeter's greatest falsetto leads - if not one of the greatest in all of hard gospel quartet! The two Paramount Singers demos (featuring Vance 'Tiny' Powell) alone are worth the price of admission. Powell's lead on He Means So Much To Me hints (vocally) just a little at his original 1964 classic Wax recording of My Time After Awhile. If you have Specialty CD 7013 (The Soul Stirrers featuring R. H. Harris - "Shine On Me") - this set has a new take of C. A. Tindley's By And By where R.H. Harris ("the father of gospel quartet") & the late Paul Foster out-duet each other. The CD also includes (taken from rare 78 rpm pressings) the very first gospel group recorded by Specialty - The Southern Harmonizers - singing in the popular prewar 'jubilee' style of the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet. The set ends with nearly 12 minutes of live "house-wreaking" a cappella singing by Rev. Presley Thomas' West Coast Jubilees. Their 7-minute version of Prof. Alex Bradford's He'll Be There is not for the faint at heart! (EL)

MERCY DEE WALTON Jasmine 3197 One Room Country Shacke & Other Struggling Blues ● CD $13.98 $10.98
28 tracks, very highly recommended
Mercy Dee Walton was one the truly great post war down home bluesmen. A superb singer and piano player and truly creative lyricist. What makes his songs so engaging are the wonderful original lyrics full of careful observations and brilliant witticisms - much of it based on his own experiences. Originally from Texas he moved to California in the late 30s and for much of his life supplemented his income from music by working as a farm laborer. Two of his songs (included here) Lonesome Cabin Blues and One Room Country Shack were not only big R&B hits but have become blues standards, recorded by many blues artists. The recordings here were made between 1949 and 1955 - Mercy recorded for three of the most important West Coast blues labels - Imperial, Modern and Specialty as well as some smaller labels. Although the mood of his songs was mostly slow and introspective, he also could up the tempo as on the witty Baba-Du-Lay Fever (G.I. Fever and his response to Chuck Berry on Come Back Maybelline. On most tracks he is accompanied by tasteful small groups and his Trailing My Baby features some lovely steel guitar work from L.C. Robinson. By 1955 the demand for down home blues diminished and Mercy went back to working in the fields. He was found by Chris Strachwitz in 1961 who recorded him for Bluesville and his own Arhoolie label. His musical talent was fully intact but any chance of becoming part of the blues revival were thwarted by his death from cerebral haemmorage in 1962 at the age of 47. This CD has superb sound, informative notes and full discographical data. I just wish they had made it a double CD which could have included all his early recordings. (FS)

DINAH WASHINGTON Fantastic Voyage 210 Original Queen Of Soul - Three Decades Of Artistry ● CD $19.98 $10.98
Three CDs, 80 tracks, highly recommended
Dinah Washington was a magnificent and incredibly versatile singer who was equally conformable singing blues, R&B, jazz, pop and even country. This superb collection compiled by R&B and soul expert Clive Richardson, traces Dinah's career from her first commercial recording - the wonderful Evil Gal Blues recorded in December 1943 accompanied by Arenett cobb, Lionel Hampton, Milt Buckner and others on through to her July, 1962 recording of It's A Mean Old World with the majority of the sides recorded for Mercury which was home to Dinah's music from 1946 to 1961 and where she had a slew of hits including West Side Baby/ You Satisfy/ It Isn't Fair/ I Don't Hurt Anymore/ What A Difference A Day Made/ and September In The Rain which are included here along with other hits and many equally fine non hits. It includes many of her great blues recordings like Blues For A Day/ Salty Papa Blues/ Good Daddy Blues/ Trouble In Mind/ New Blowtop Blues/ Backwater Blues and, of course, Big Long Sliding Thing (about a trombone, of course). It includes her wonderful jazz inspired versions of two Hank Williams songs Cold, Cold Heart. It also includes her two #1 hits with Brook Benton - Baby (You've Got What It Takes) and A Rockin' Good Way and much more. Through the mid 50s most of her recordings were with jazz groups like Lionel Hampton's Orch., Lucky Thompson's All Stars, Cootie Williams Orch., The Jimmy Cobb Orch. and othrs. By the mid 50s many of her recordings started featured string arrangemnts but she also made sides with smaller groups like the Eddie Chamblee Orch. including six superb tracks from the album "Dinah Sings Bessie Smith." In general, the compiler, has tried to focus mostly on performances without strings which is fine with me though perhaps not a totally representative cross section of her recordings. Still, Dinah was so prolific that it's not surprising that any compiler's preferences would be bound to show and, from my point of view, makes this a stronger collection than it might otherwise be. Sound quality is superb and the 20 page illustrated booklet includes an informative essay by
