VARIOUS ARTISTS Buffalo Bop 55084 Rockabilly Acetates ● CD $19.98
Although there is no information I would assume from the graphics that all the tracks here are drawn from acetates cut for studio demos which means that many of them are probably one of a kind issues. Most of the artists are totally obscure - the identify of a couple of them are completely unknown. The most "well known" names here are Benn Zeppa, Scotty McKay and Art Adams. VARIOUS ARTISTS Buffalo Bop 55092 Rockabilly Fever ● CD $19.98
30 tracks, highly recommended A particularly fine set of rockabilly and rocking country though some of the choicest items have been reissued elsewhere. Ray Taylor & The Alabma Pals are superb - their Clocking My Card is pretty much straight country with a bluegrass flavor and great lyrics but Connie Lou & My Hamtramck Baby adds some rock 'n roll and blues to the mixture ending up with two real classic performances though they are also available on Collector 4438. Other gems include Don Wade's great Oh Love (also on Collector 4422), Jeff Johnson's terrific version of Jimmie Skinner's Doin' My Time done Johnny Cash style and the classic country boogie sound of Stoney Mt. Boogie by Bob Varney. There is also the amazing Lovers Hill by Trice Garner which has a very unusual structure. There are also two uptempo country sides by the intriguing Denver Duke & Jeffrey Null whose vocal style sound like they are either gay or pretending to be gay which was certainly unusual for the 50s. Lots of other goodies from Zeke Clements, Mike Miller, Curtis & The Melody Cowboys, The Ferrell Brothers, Art Ontario and others. A real winner! (FS)

Boogie/ LEE VOORHIES: Load Up My Blues/ DON WADE: Oh Love

VARIOUS ARTISTS Buffalo Bop 55080 Rockabilly Rock ● CD $19.98
30 tracks, 67 mins, recommended Carl E. Tyndall's introductory song Hillbilly Rock is more descriptive of this fine collection than "rockabilly".Among the highlights are Tommy Jackson' Flat Top Box, Tommy Scott's bluesy Alone With My Memory, Gene Cole's terrific Coal Miner's Blues, Bob Dean & Cindy's Walk, Walk, Walking Blues, The Kinsmen's clever Stop & Get Off, Rudy Thacker's intense Black Train and Dusty Owens sounding a lot like Faron Young on Hey Honey. Also includes Billy Barnett, The String Breakers, Brownie Johnson, Don Hart, Charlie Lightfoot and others. There's hot steel guitar on many of the cuts. A few tracks are dubbed from noisy pressings but, all in all, this is a very fine set. (FS)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Buffalo Bop 55016 Rompin' Stompin' ● CD $19.98
30 tracks, 65 min., recommended The focus here is on stompin' piano-fueled blasters in the Jerry Lee vein - the Killer's spawn you might say! Grady Lewis kicks it off right with the great Rompin' Stompin', Wayne Rogers urges us to do the Wayne Boogie, the Marcus Brothers give us a taste of the Sugar Booger, and Bobby Brant pounds the keys on Piano Nellie. 30 tracks, 65 mins, highly recommended Like most rockabilly collections this collection has its ups and downs but this has a higher proportion of stone winners including a great version of the standard Crawdad Song by Red Moore. There are three hot sides by Cliff Nash - one with terrific guitar and the other two with honkin' sax, The Country G-I's Go Girl Go doesn't let up for one moment and Johnny Harris lets loose with the Bo Diddley riff on acoustic guitar on the great Tired Of Crawling, Start To Run. A mixed bag of 30 rock 'n' roll obscurities. Much of it is relatively pedestrian though there are a few real winners like the Johnson Brothers' great hard driving cover of Chuck Berry's Roll Over Beethoven, Glen Glenn's Don't You Love Me, Glen Mann's Truly Yours and Marlon Grisham's Ain't That A Dilly though this latter one has been reissued several time before. There are also several real dogs including the painfully wretched Teen-Age Talk by Vincent Macree.

30 tracks, 66 min., essential If you dug the pioneering "Hot Boppin' Girls" series you oughta get a load of this rippin' set of wild women rockers that makes Wanda Jackson look like the tip of the iceberg! As usual, the first cut's an absolute stunner (Jim Dandy by Sara Lee) that sets the tone for the rest of the action. Brenda Darlin tells us she's a Rockin Lady, Freeda Boxx is Havin' A Ball, Miss Georgia does some Rockin' After School, Sandy Lee does Ballin' Keen, and Jan Moore's Play It Cool is so great it's on here twice! Also, some spectacular photos that would probably be illegal in some states. Don't miss this one. (GDR)

33 tracks, 72 minutes, recommended Here's a pack of lovely ditties your sweetheart would love to hear you sing after you split a malt at the soda shop. Lucky for you these are more Ricky Nelson-cool than Bobby Vee, with Chip Fisher's lament Poor Me, Johnny Duffet pleading Just Give Me Your Heart, and Steve Lawrence batting his Pretty Blue Eyes. Also, a Mr. Tony Orlando thinks he's The Lonliest, Joe Nelson has a Heartbreak, and Ricky Scott cries I Didn't Mean It. Three of these tunes were penned by Lee Hazlewood, so you know the material's up to snuff. And great heartthrob photos suitable for framing! (GDR)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Buffalo Bop 55027 Teenage Wolfpack ● CD $19.98
30 tracks, 65 min, recommended Buffalo Bop is back with another fine collection of juvenile delinquet-flavored rock'n'roll. This one is distinguished by a number of fine acetates, including I'm Ready by Hank Mizell and the rockin' Rockin' Daddy by Sonny Fisher. Tex Neighbors sounds a little off-center on his Rockin' Beat (great guitar in this one too), and its flip Ain't Going That Route is a good country-styled rocker. Then the Tornadoes use tornado sounds on Tornado Twist. Riki and the Rickatones supply the hottest track, however, with the great T.N.T. ("Teens 'n' Tunes rockin' the world to bits"), and their Whiplash rocks pretty good too. Solid if not super. (GDR)

31 tracks, 71 minutes, essential. Now here's a great concept collection. An entire 31 track CD devoted to the numerous rockabilly and rock'n'roll tunes using American Indian themes. A lot of this isn't "PC" but what the heck, it's only rock'n'roll. Highpoints include the savage Wigwam Willie by Carl Phillips, Indian Joe by Art Adams, the movin' instro Warpath by Lenny & the Star Chiefs (who dressed as Indians on stage), Wa-Chic-Ka-Noka by Tommy Holmes, the sound effects extravaganza Geronimo by the Renegades, Sammy Masters' classic Rockin' Red Wing , the beautiful (in spite of the title) Chief Whoopin-Koff by the Royal Knights and on and on.
