ARTHUR ALEXANDER Ace CDCHD 805 The Monument Years ● CD $18.98
28 tracks recorded for Monument and Sound Stage 7 between 1965 and 1972 by this superb soul singer including many previously unissued.

ARTHUR ALEXANDER Ace CDCH 922 The Greatest ● CD $18.98
A CD collection of the 21 fine cuts by Alexander from Dot, combining 12 cuts from A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues (Ace CH 66) and 9 cuts from Soldier Of Love (Ace CH 207). Alexander was a soulful singer whose name is not as well knows as it should be. A few hits and lots of obscurity don't prepare you for the warmth and feeling in these cuts. While Peter Gurainick likes the later Warner Bros. cuts better (Ace LP CH 272), I find the simpler arrangements and the more tentative vocals of these cuts from the earlier part of Alexander's career immensely appealing. (RF)
ARTHUR ALEXANDER: A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues/ After You/ All I Need Is You/ Anna/ Black Night/ Call Me Lonesome/ Detroit City/ Don't You Know It/ Dream Girl/ Go Home Girl/ I Hang My Head And Cry/ I Wonder Where You Are Tonight/ In The Middle Of It All/ Keep Her Guessing/ Soldier Of Love/ Where Have You Been All My Life/ Whole Lot Of Trouble/ Without A Song/ You Better Move On/ You Don't Care/ You're The Reason

RUBY ANDREWS Grapevine Soul 3014 Just Loving You CD $19.98
28 tracks, 77 min., essential
If you were thinking of opening your own soul music label to reissue the sadly overlooked and criminally ignored great soul singers of the past the right way, think again. Grapevine is already there. Ruby Andrews recorded for Ric Williams' Zodiac Records, and this release gathers most of those sides (1967-73) and includes booklet notes from Chicago soul pundit Robert Pruter (author of "Chicago Soul", the definitive work on the subject). Andrews' earliest hits, such as Casanova (You're Playing Days Are Over), showcase her sweeter side, vocally. But after working with The Brothers of Soul and recording out of Detroit, Andrews vocal style became a deep-soul shout with power to spare -- check You Made A Believer (Out Of Me). Standouts include Help Yourself (Lover), the LP-only track Since I Found Out, The Love I Need, Uh! Uh! Boy, That's A No No, Tit For Tat, You Can Run (But You Can't Hide), and the "northern" soul dance-floor packer Just Loving You, and everything else. (JC)

RUBY ANDREWS Collectables 5201 Casanova ● CD $11.98

LEE ANDREWS & THE HEARTS Collectables 8827 For Collectors Only ● CD $29.98
3 discs, 61 tracks, approx. 2 and a half hours, recommended
Well, the good news is that someone has finally negotiated for the rights to most of the material put out during the 50's and early 60's by one of the greatest voices in the history of rhythm and blues vocal groups. That voice, belonging of course to Lee Andrews, resulted in few actual hits - Long Lonely Nights, Tear Drops, and Try the Impossible - but that voice, for me at least, still possesses an assured smoothness and warmth that rises way above the norm for 50's vocal group leads. And just as the Del Vikings' Come Go With Me is the quintessential rock 'n' roll jump, Tear Drops is that same era's quintessential ballad. Disc one here focuses on Andrews' material on the Rainbow and Gotham labels, including Maybe You'll Be There, The White Cliffs of Dover, The Fairest, Bluebird of Happiness, and Lonely Room. Disc two finishes out the Gotham cuts and includes the Mainline/Chess tracks and most of those numbers originally done for Casino/United Artists. Its high points include Leona, Just Suppose, Long Lonely Nights, Why Do I, All I Ask Is Love, and Maybe You'll Be There (the U.A. version). Disc three closes out the Casino sessions, includes the complete Swan sessions, and takes us into some of the more pop-oriented cuts on Gowen and Crimson. Specific tracks on this last disc include I Wonder, I Miss You So, I've Got a Right to Cry, P. S. I Love You, Cold Gray Dawn, Quiet As Its Kept, I've Had It. The only crucial material that is missing are the four Parkway cuts. Otherwise, terrific music, packaged in a double thickness jewel box with a decent booklet. The booklet even includes a decent discography. The less good news is, I think, that even though Collectables has used as its source material, for most of this music at least, the original studio tapes, my ears say that it did not use any state-of-the-art sound restoration equipment to clean up the sometimes poorly-recorded sound. So, while this collection is good and is recommended, if the sound quality were better, it would surely merit an "essential" rating. (DH)

THE AQUATONES Relic 7051 The Aquatones Sing For "You" ● CD $13.98
21 tracks, 47 min., recommended
I'll be the first to admit that not every number ever recorded by Lynn Nixon and her fellow Aquatones lives up to the standards (whatever you perceive those to be) set by their one hit, the title tune here. Nonetheless most of these tracks capture very nicely the youthful and happily naive enthusiasm of the late 50s - a time when even a group like . . . well, like the Aquatones could have a hit. Among the best of these efforts are Our First Kiss/ Say You'll Be Mine/ Crazy for You/ My Darling/ She's the One for Me/ So Fine/ My One Desire, and For You, For You. Syrupy stuff to be sure, but sweet nonetheless. Five cuts longer than the earlier Relic Aquatones LP. Fine sound, home-made graphics, and fine notes by Relic Records boss Donn Fileti. (DH)
THE AQUATONES: Anna Mae/ Crazy For You/ Crazy For You/ Every Time/ For You, For You/ For You, For You/ Light Up The Sky/ My Darling/ My One Desire/ My One Desire/ My Treasure/ Our First Kiss/ Say You‘ll Be Mine/ She‘s The One For Me/ So Fine/ The Drive-in/ The Drive-in/ There's A Long, Long Trail/ Wanted/ You/ You

THE ARABIANS Genie 1001 The Many Sounds Of ● CD $17.98
Apparently there were at least six different vocal groups using the name The Arabians and I think most of them are featured here though there is no explanation as to which is which. There are 21 tracks in all - some of them feature lead vocals by Little Herbert, some by Edward Hamilton and some by "Lawrence" - lead on others is unidentified. Sound quality is frequently mediocre and with the absence of documentation makes it of greatest appeal to die hard doo-wop fans.
THE ARABIANS: (Please) Take A Chance On Me/ Baby Don't You Weep/ Bouncing Ball/ Coincidence/ Condition Your Heart/ Crazy Little Fever/ Heaven Sent You/ I Love You So/ Let Me Try/ My Heart Beats Over and Over Again/ My One Possession/ Now You Have To Cry Alone/ Ooh Baby/ School Is Cool/ Somebody Tell Me/ Take Me/ Teardrops In The Night/ Tell Me/ The Shack/ Today I Kissed My Love/ You Upset Me Baby

PATTI AUSTIN Body & Soul 3051402 Take Away The Pain Stain ● CD $15.98
22 tracks, 59 min, recommended
While sultry singer Austin is best known for a more "adult" R&B, this shows a very different side to her! Though her 1st LP (for CTI) wasn't done until '76, Patti had actually recorded since '66 for such labels as Coral, Columbia & UA, & only had a minor hit with UA, while most of the rest languished in obscurity. This French label collects all her Coral sides for the 1st time, 11 singles never before on LP. Some of these were so obscure that Patti didn't even remember doing some of them! Austin was just 17 when she started these sides, recorded '65-67, with some great soul & pop-soul sides, none of which cracked the top 50! Includes such great tracks as Leave A Little Love/ Only All The Time/Someone's Gonna Cry. With full liner notes & rare label pics. (GM)
