THE AD LIBS Collectables 5742 And Friends ● CD $11.98
18 tracks, 45 min., recommended
The first 10 tracks belong to the Ad Libs, who made a name in 1965 with the light weight The Boy From New York City, their biggest but not strongest recording. Bottom Of Soul, with its atypical male lead, is twice as soulful as anything with Mary Ann Thomas in charge vocally. But then when Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich are writing for a group, maximum soulfulness is not exactly a high priority. The other 8 cuts belong to various onetime Red Bird and Blue Cat acts: 4 by The Dixie Cups (Chapel Of Love/ Iko Iko/ People Say/ Gee The Moon Is Shining Bright), 1 by the obscure Roddie Joy, 1 by The Butterflies (really just Ellie Greenwich multi-tracked), 1 by The Poets (Merry Christmas Baby), 1 by The Charmettes. Every bit as emotionally satisfying as a potato chip. Soul Lite. (JC)
THE AD-LIBS: Ask Anyone (Anybody)/ Bottom Of Soul/ Down Home Girl/ He Ain't No Angel/ Johnny My Boy/ Kicked Around/ Nothing Worse Than Being Alone/ Ooh Wee Oh Gee/ The Boy From New York City/ The Slime/ THE BUTTERFLIES: Gee Baby Gee/ THE CHARMETTES: Sugar Boy/ THE DIXIE CUPS: Chapel Of Love/ Gee The Moon Is Shining Bright/ Iko Iko/ People Say/ RODDIE JOY: The La La Song/ THE POETS: Merry Christmas Baby

20 tracks, 77 mins, highly recommended
Great collection of 30 sides by this fine and expressive gospel inflected singer best remembered for her classic Shake A Hand which is included here along with 29 other great sides. This disc features most of her Herald sides recorded between 1953 and 1956 along with three of earlier sides which were issued as by the Joe Morris Orchestra including the amusing duet with Joe on That's What Makes My Baby Fat ad it also includes her 1957 hit Keeper Of My Heart recorded in New Orleans with the Dave Bartholomew Band. Excellent sound but no notes. (FS)

JOHNNY ADAMS Fuel 2000 61615 An Introduction To Johnny Adams ● CD $13.98

New Orleans singer Adams wraps his soulful, soaring pipes around 16 searing ballads and up tempo R&B items on these recordings produced by Senator Jones for a number of different labels in the late 70s and early 80s. Recorded at the Sea-Saint Studio with top New Orleans musicians like Walter Washington, Alan Toussaint, Leo Nocentelli and others he does a selection of new compositions as well as a diverse selection of covers ranging from Bobby Bland's Share Your Love With Me to Tom Jones's Ill never Fall In Love Again. Also includes After All The Good Is Gone/ Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You/ Your Love Is All I Need/ Who Will The Next Fool Be/ I Only Want To Be With You/ Struttin' On Sunday/ Love Letters/ Love Me Now and the terrific A Shoulder To Cry On featuring stellar guitar work. About half these tracks were previously available on AIM 1201 ($13.98). Now if only someone would make all of Adams' material from this period available. (FS)

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2044 From The Heart ● CD $15.98
This is Johnny Adams' finest Rounder recording, a truly lovely and moving collection of 10 songs. Includes the beautiful soulful ballads From The Heart/ Teach Me To Forget/ Scarred Knees. Also some hot rockin' bluesy numbers I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home/ Roadblock/ If I Ever Had A Good Thing, and check out the jazzy phrasings of Why Do I/ Laughin' And Clownin'. New Orleans' finest session players enhance this 1983 recording. This is my favorite contemporary R&B recording, honest injun. (PG)

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2049 After Dark ● CD $15.98
Adams croons, warbles, and preaches through ten fine songs from such as John Hiatt, Doc Pomus and Paul Kelly. Benefitting from a fine production and tasty guitar from Wayne Bennett, Johnny masterfully updates the classic soul songs Snap Your Fingers and Do Right Woman , as well as exquisite interpretations of newer songs such as Lovers Will and Give a Broken Heart a Break . Nice job all around. ([JM])

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2059 Room With A View Of The Blues ● CD $15.98

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2083 I Won't Cry ● CD $15.98
Johnny's eleven singles on Ric Records are all considered prized collector's items today and are undoubtedly his finest work in terms of raw soulful balladry - only occasional Shelby Singleton sides come anywhere close. Cut in New Orleans between 1959 and 1963, this material (produced by Mac Rebennack) is supported at times by the great Edgar Blanchard & His Gondoliers. Standouts include I Won't Cry/ I Want To Do Everything For You/ Teach Me To Forget/ I Solemnly Promise/ Who Are You/ Lonely Drifter. 14 cuts in all, with fine sleeve notes from Jeff Hannusch and great digital remastering by Dr. Toby. Essential "Tan Canary" product. (OLN)

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2095 Walking On A Tightrope ● CD $15.98
New LP by the fine New Orleans singer Johnny Adams devoted to the compositions of the great Percy Mayfield. Adams is helped out by a nice group of musicians including Duke Robillard(g) and Wolfman Washington(g). Walking On A Tightrope/ Lost Mind/ Danger Zone/ You're In For A Big Surprise/ Baby Please , etc.

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2109 Sings Doc Pomus ● CD $15.98
Johnny's 6th  release on Rounder may be his best yet. (Though "From The Heart", Rounder 2044, is a classic worth checking out). Johnny puts his unique vocal stylings to 11 songs penned by the late Doc Pomus. Reflecting the deep emotions of tunes like Still In Love/ Prisoner Of Life/ The Real Me, Johnny's voice dips to a rich baritone, then soars with his patented falsetto sound. Dr. John provides the fluid and soulful keyboards in the hot backing band. A powerful and emotional recording. (PG)

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2125 Good Morning Heartache ● CD $15.98
10 tracks, fans only
Johnny is always best live and singing on home turf, but on this sparse collection we find our man in a jazzy after-hours format, with seemingly soulless renditions of You Don't Know What Love Is/ I Just Found Out About Love/ I Hadn't Anyone 'Til You/ Teach Me Tonight/ Good Morning Heartache/ But Not For Me/ Don't Go To Strangers. Only on Come Rain Or Come Shine do we detect a flicker of his customary conviction. Walter "Wolfman" Washington guests on Back To Normal/ Jealous Kind. (OLN)

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2135 The Verdict ● CD $15.98
12 cuts, 57 mins, recommended
New Orleans' "Tan Nightingale" is wonderful on this his 2nd LP of late night jazz, the follow-up to '93's "Good Morning Heartache" (Rounder 2125 - $15.98) There's a few jumpin' tracks here, but my faves are the smoochers, including the title track, originally by the 5 Keys, backed by a gorgeous quartet led by saxist Houston Person, who also backs Johnny on standards Willow Weep For Me & I Cover The Waterfront, and the beautiful opening tune, Dinah Washington's Blue Gardenia backed only by pianist Harry Connick Jr. Also include 3 tunes co-written by Johnny's 2 favorite medical men, Doc Pomus & Dr. John, including the never before recorded Dreams Must Be Going Out Of Style. (GM)

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2144 One Foot In The Blues ● CD $15.98

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 2155 Man Of My Word ● CD $15.98
Recommended
The final CD by the late Tan Nightingale, recorded only months before he passed in 9/98 - he'd already been diagnosed with cancer before these sessions. With a crack band with the guitars of Walter "Wolfman " Washington & Michael Toles, with tons of new songs including the now even more poignant This Time I'm Gone For Good & Dan Penn's It Ain't The Same Thing, he goes deeper into the old tunes, especially Penn's classic It Tears Me Up, originally by Percy Sledge, William Bell's You Don't Miss Your Water, Little Willie John's Now You Know & Brook Benton's Looking Back. This is deep soul at it's best. But the best is saved till last - a gorgeous a-capella Never Alone, with the studio's best gospel voices joined by the beautiful voice of Aaron Neville. A strong selection to go out with. (GM)

JOHNNY ADAMS Rounder 11581 There Is Always One More Time ● CD $15.98
15 tracks, essential
Wonderful collection of the late N'awlins singer's Rounder recordings 1983-98. A fine cross-section includes such essential tracks as his version of I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home, Dan Penn's One Foot In The Blues, & of course the 2 writers he'd return to again & again (& did a whole CDs worth of material for each), Percy Mayfield with Walking On A Tightrope, & Doc Pomus including the fine title tune. Add to this backing from such masters as Dr. John, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Lonnie Smith, Duke Robillard, even a duet with The Tan Canary backed only by Harry Connick Jr. on piano on A Lot Of Living To Do. And even if you had all of Johnny's Rounder discs, you still wouldn't have everything here - there's also a gorgeous version of I'll Only Miss Her When I Think Of Her from Red Tyler's CD, a duet with Ruth Brown on the rockin' I Don't Know from Ruth's Rounder disc, even a never released Happy Hard Times written by Doc Pomus & a band including Dr. John & Robillard. The set ends with perhaps his most beautiful recording, which ended his final CD, an acapella gospel choir quartet version of Never Alone with co-lead by Aaron Neville. (GM)
