LOUIS ARMSTRONG JSP JSPCD 4202 The Big Band Sides, 1930/32 ● CD $22.98
2 CDs, 42 tracks, 137 mins, highly recommended
On this double disc set, JSP documents the two year period -following the legendary and influential series of Hot Five and Seven recordings made for OKeh during the 20's-when Armstrong was featured instrumental and vocal soloist with several big bands led by others, all the while building on his reputation as a hot player and a unique singer. Disc One highlights sides cut with bands led by saxophonist Les Hite, trumpet player Leon Elkins, and drummer Willie Lynch. Disc Two contains tracks by Armstrong, fronting his own orchestra, cut in 1931 and 1932. Although he was already well known with Jazz fans, he had begun during this time to establish himself with the public at large. And to that end, Armstrong began to record more material from Tin Pan Alley, like Star Dust. According to the liner notes, Louis considered his '31-'32 band to be one of his favorites, although the writer considers it to be "quite sloppy" at times. I disagree; the band seems pretty tight and Armstrong's playing is marvelous as always. Judge for yourself, and give this one a listen. (GMC)

DUKE ELLINGTON JSP JSPCD 924 Volume 1: 1926-1929 Mrs Clinkscales To The Cotton Club ● CD $28.98
4 discs 96 tracks essential
This may be one of the best sets to be released in 2005! Ellington collectors find it hard to keep track of the early years, as he extensively recorded for the four major labels Victor, Columbia , Brunkswick & Vocalion. The set starts off with some of Duke's rarest, the pre-majors recordings starting with backing Alberta Prime & Florence Bristol in 11/24 for Blu-Disc, as well as their own first coupling Choo Choo/ Gotta Hurry Home. From there it was The Washingtonians recording for Pathe'& Gennett before starting to record for Vocalion & Brunswick as Duke Ellington & His Kentucky Club Orch, for Victor as Duke Ellington Orch, Columbia as The Washingtonians. And that doesn't include sessions for Pathe as The Whopee Makers, Okeh as The Harlem Footwarmers & The Chicago Footwarmers, even Warren Mills & His Blue Serenaders. There's multiple versions of his signature tunes of the time, some of my faves of all-time, including Black & Tan Fantasy/ Creole Love Call/ East St. Louis Toodle-Oo/Jubilee Stomp/ Black Beauty/ The Mooche/ Digga Digga Doo & Doin' The New Lowdown. There's discographical info that's a bit hard to follow, & unfortunately no credits for the remastering. And by the way, Mrs Clinkscales was the actual name of young Edward Ellington's piano teacher! STAN GETZ JSP JSPCD 943 The Smoothest Operator ● CD $28.98
Four CD set with 98 tracks featuring a fine cross section of the great saxophonist Stan Getz' early years, featuring remastered tracks from original records made between 1946 and 1953. The early flowering of a major modern jazz talent and its evolution into something of universal appeal is revealed. Starting his musical career at the age of 15 in 1942 he worked with a number of important big bands before stepping out on his own in 1946. . From 1946 onwards, Getz recorded under his own name. He was much admired as one of the few instrumentalists who was able to reconcile the opposing needs of Bebop and 'cool' and the smoothness of his tone was unique.

COLEMAN HAWKINS JSP JSPCD 931 The Essential Sides Remastered, 1929-1939 ● CD $28.98
4 CD Box Set, 104 tracks, 5 Hours, 15 mins, highly recommended
These tracks cover Hawkin's Pre-War period and pre-1939 "Body and Soul" recordings, which solidified The Hawk's place as the pre-eminent tenor saxophonist of his time - and even most times since! The saxophone was still a young, "novelty" instrument pre Hawkins, and his virtuoso approach helped establish it as a "serious" instrument, one now so closely associated with jazz that it's nearly impossible to remember when the instrument wasn't an imperative part of the jazz lexicon. Hawkin's authoritative sound and style can be heard growing and developing in these tracks, from the first recordings with the Little Chocolate Dandies, to the rare 1936 sessions with The Berries, through his recordings with his own Trio. These are marvelous, nicely re-mastered tracks that feature a true legend bringing an instrument - along with a relatively new music - into the future, into a new art form. Hawkins continued to elevate the instrument and jazz to new levels of artistry for 30 years AFTER these recordings, yet these early tracks alone establish him as a master who laid the basic foundation of the tenor saxophone language, one that virtually all subsequent players of note have drawn from for 70 years, so far. Wonderfully compiled/sounding transfers, with the typical JSP frustrating lack of worthy notes. Then again, you'd need a book to truly do justice to such important recordings... (RB)

JIMMIE NOONE JSP JSPCD 926 Chicago Rhythm, Apex Blues - The REcordings Of Jimmie N ● CD $28.98
4 CDs, 5hrs 10 mins, recommended
Jimmie Noone was born in the Birthplace of Jazz (New Orleans) just as jass was becoming jazz, and the well regarded (and liked) clarinetist played with many of the major cats--Freddie Keppard, Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines and Mildred Bailey--during the early development and growth of the nascent American art form, mostly in a sideman role. He became a well-known leader at the Apex Club in Chicago in 1926 and from that point on kept a small group "traditional" sound going, through the popular advent of Swing and shifting, expanding jazz styles. These recordings span the time frame from when Noone was a well established, though never terribly commercially "successful" player, to the end of his career/life. Full of great versions of popular tunes and foot-patting originals, this set covers the important development of the New Orleans - Chicago sound and style. You could spend a lifetime trying to compile these often obscure recordings (as I'm sure the producer's have) and to have these recordings by an influential, though nearly forgotten clarinetist is seemingly not such a big deal, but is actually a treasure trove of the Great American Art Form. The sound quality varies (as it should), but is more than sufficient overall to please. (RB)

DJANGO REINHARDT JSP 901 The Classic Early Recordings In Chronological Order ● CD $28.98
5 CD box set, 124 tracks, essential
Django & The Quintet Of The Hot Club of France cut a myriad of pre-war sides that have been haphazardly re-issued for decades. This 5 CD set (originally issued as five separate CDs) is not exactly chronological, but each takes on a different facet of Django's early career with the Hot Club (usual line up with Django on lead guitar), Stephane Grappelly (later spelled Grappelli) on violin, Joseph Reinhardt & Pierre Ferret or Roger Chaput on guitars & Louis Vola on string bass). The CD starts with their original recordings under the name "Delauney's Jazz" from '34, then the Hot Club recordings of '35, including the Hot Club members backing Big Boy Goude & Alix Combelle. Vol 2 skips over to '38-39 to cover all the London Decca sides including the Reinhardt/Grappelly duets, some with Stephane on piano, as well as Django's solo sides. Vol 3 has the '38-39 Paris Decca sides. Vol 4 actually follows vol 1 & goes back to '35, starting with Grappelly (on piano) & Reinhardt with Coleman Hawkins, in his band &, on Stardust, an incredible trio!, then back to the est of the '35 & '36 sides, including some with vocalist Freddy Taylor. The final volume has the '37 Quintet sides (going up to the material on vol 2), ending with the '34 sides with Django playing with Garnet Clark & His Hot Club 4, featuring Bill Coleman on trumpet & vocals. Each CD has 24-26 sides, & all but Vol. 4 have rare alternate takes. All tracks have been remastered from best available 78s and pitch corrected where necessary by mastering engineer Ted Kendall - a protégé of John R.T. Davies (GM)

SHORTY ROGERS JSP JSPCD 944 Volume 1: 1946-1954 ● CD $28.98
5 CDs, 93 tracks, 200+ mins, recommended
Trumpet Ace, Bandleader, Composer, Milton M. Rajonsky was born in Massachusetts in 1924 and by the early 1950's found himself on the opposite coast as Shorty Rogers, a major figurehead in the nascent West Coast Jazz movement. This 5 CD set adds one disc and an additional 17 tracks (mostly from the Stan Kenton era) to the Proper Box 92 set that (GM) has so ably reviewed in newsletter #140. This set lacks the Proper book and the notes are basic at best, but musically it's all the Shorty Rogers you need from this early portion of his long career. (RB)

JO STAFFORD JSP JSPCD 950 Her Greatest Hits ● CD $28.98
Perhaps this whopping four-CD, 108-track collection should be titled "Her Greatest Hits, And More." Jo Stafford, a premier jazz-pop singer of the late '30s onward, had a great voice, substantial musicianship behind her, an undeniable sex appeal, and a seemingly limitless repertoire, if you judge by what's on this compilation. Each CD is split into thematic or chronological segments. CD one -- "Pied Pipers, Tommy Dorsey, Early Recordings" is her entry point as a big band "chick" singer including seminal tunes "In a Little Spanish Town," "Yes Indeed," and "Embraceable You." CD two, consisting of "V Discs, Airchecks, Solos, Collaborations" may be the least interesting, but features familiar tunes as "Haunted Heart" and "The Gentleman Is a Dope." Her actual "greatest hits" are on CD three, while CD four is a mix of obscurities and jazz standards wrapped in the caveat "Pops, Jazz, Standards, Showtime." Fans of Stafford should salivate for the opportunity to buy this comprehensive overview of her career, lovingly issued by the reliable JSP label.

FATS WALLER JSP JSPCD 927 Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 1- Messin' Around With The Blues ● CD $28.98
4 CD box set, 110 Tracks, 5 Hours 15 Minutes, highly recommended
With certainly not as much well-known material as on the great and recommended Volume 2, this volume (which, due to the strenuous brilliant research and compiling it entailed was issued AFTER Vol.2) presents the earliest recordings from the ever-wonderful Fats Waller, tracing the roots of his early influences to offer the cornerstone of his future style. From vaudevillian singer Sara Martin to blues maven Alberta Hunter, to gospel performer J.C. Burnett and on to the Big Band swing of the Fletcher Henderson Band and beyond, Waller shows incredible chops and the keen ear of a first call accompanist. In the many solo pipe organ recordings, Waller dazzles with his deft touch and incessant swing. Grounded in the stride piano style, armed with a vast knowledge of current popular song styles and forms (and a love of Bach, too!), Waller combined his innate desire to entertain with his rich wit to go on to become one of the most unique and important voices in the history of jazz. Listen here and you'll hear how that voice developed. Not only will you learn much, you'll have a delightful time of it! Decent notes and the sound quality is as good as one could hope for. (RB)

FATS WALLER JSP JSPCD 928 The Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2: Handful Of Keys ● CD $28.98
4 CD box set, 101 tracks, 5 Hours 15 mins, highly recommended
Subtitled "Pianist, Songwriter, Entertainer, Innovator," this set covers recordings from 1929-1934, wherein Thomas "Fats" Waller proves he was a master of these descriptors. Easily taken for granted with his bubbly and entertaining personality and accessible style, it's easy to forget what a true artist Waller was and what a great and long lasting contribution he made to jazz. This set puts it all into perspective, from deft/bristling keyboard runs to energetic, often-satiric vocals. Waller, a brilliant stride pianist, dabbles with New Orleans Hot, Boogie and "Chicago" styles of jazz, turning it into a style uniquely his own. Hard to imagine there was a Great Depression on when these tracks were recorded (leading to Waller only releasing two sides in 1930); the songs are upbeat, light-hearted, and joyous - very representative of a man that lived life to its fullest. Beautifully compiled and with very nice sound, the only thing this fantastic set is lacking are notes that are worthy of the music and the effort that went into putting this together. Five hours plus of music and you still want more... (RB)

FATS WALLER JSP JSPCD 948 Volume 4 Of The Complete Recorded Works, 1936-1938 ● CD $28.98
4 CDs, 104 Tracks 180+ mins, highly recommended
Listed before not not reviewed. In continuing to offer the complete recorded works of Fats Waller, JSP offers a cultural treasure chest nearly unequalled in the history of recorded music. These 4 discs encompass recordings done in Fats' native New York, Chicago, and Hollywood, Ca between a busy touring schedule. While most of the songs are standard "pop" fair, Waller and his steady band of ace musicians (Herman Autrey-Trumpet, Gene Sedric-Clarinet & Tenor sax, Albert Casey-guitar, Cedric Wallace-bass, and Wilmore "Slick" Jones -drums) elevate the pieces to an art form, providing swinging, inventive rhythms, deft solos, and top drawer interplay. Waller's infectious, humorous vocals are present in most of the tunes (there are quite a few instrumentals...), offering a casual listening access to most folk, while his virtuoso piano playing will keep the jazz buff's attention and then some. Wallers prodigious talents flow into The Sheik of Araby and Why do Hawaiians Sing Aloha? and raise such fluff to a gold standard. This set also offers such gems as Honeysuckle Rose/ Tea For Two/ The Joint is Jumpin', and On the Sunny Side of the Street. This is volume 4 (16 discs so far) and STILL not too much Fats Waller. Excellent transfers and sound, and the notes are wonderful! (RB)

FATS WALLER JSP JSPCD 949 Volume 5 Of The Complete Recorded Works, 1938-1940 ● CD $28.98
4 CDs, 101 Sides 180+ mins, highly recommended
Listed before but not reviewed. With Vol. 5 we get Fats with his ace "Rhythm" (Herman Autrey-Trumpet,Gene Sedric-Clarinet & Tenor sax, Albert Casey-guitar, Cedric Wallace-bass, and Wilmore "Slick" Jones -drums) on about half the sides, with the other tracks made up of American "names" (Max Kaminsky, Lee Wiley, Eddie Condon, Gene Austin) and some "Continentals" from a couple trips to London. The London sides provide some interesting and unique forays into one of Waller's loves - the pipe organ. The organ tracks feature spirituals and two tracks with Adelaide Hall on vocals and an insight into a deep spiritual side of Waller's personality usually well concealed behind his playful, swinging jazz side. The London dates also offer The London Suite (8 sides - June 13, 1939), Waller's "serious" piece composed for pipe organ. Interesting, but really not as much a satisfying masterpiece as so many of the three-minute tunes he created with his Rhythm. The last 12 tracks on disc 4 are alternative cuts. The Rhythm tracks are the usual gold standard Fats Waller, with the rest a window into other aspects of this musical master that satisfy, but don't quite delight. Vol. 5 has typical great sound and notes from JSP and offers further proof of the phenomenal talent of one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of the 20th century. (RB)
