VARIOUS ARTISTS Document DOCD 5492 1940s Vocal Groups ● CD $15.98
26 tracks, 73 min., essential When William Langford left the Golden Gate Quartet to join the Southern Sons, he took both his singing talents and his knowledge of the recording industry with him. As a result of that insider knowledge, the hugely talented Sons - with their exceptional tenor lead James Baxter - none of whom had recorded before, got into the Bluebird studios and laid down these 20 utterly splendid jubilee style gospel numbers - among them Above My Head I Hear Music in the Air, Lead Me to That Rock, Rest for the Weary, I'm Free at Last, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and I Want Two Wings. This much of the program pretty much duplicates Gospel Jubilee LP 1406 from 1990. But the last six numbers here are new to the reissue arena as far as I know. They are the first sides recorded by the group which eventually became known simply as the Harmonizing Four; those numbers include I Done Done What You Told Me to Do, Every Time I Feel the Spirit, and When I've Done the Best I Can. All of this, and authoritative notes by Ray Funk make this disc an absolute must buy. DH

VARIOUS ARTISTS Document 5340 Black Vocal Groups, Vol 1 : 1924-1930 ● CD $15.98
25 tracks, 70 min., recommended Document's investigation of the black vocal group tradition opens with this compilation of the recorded works of four different ensembles. Two rather formal sounding tracks by the Original Valentin Choral Club Quintet from 1924 open the program: Sing On and Give Me That Old Time Religion. Then the polished Sunset Four sings 13 old time numbers recorded between 1924 and 1925, including Do You Call That Religion, the engaging Barnum's Steam Calliope, Walk in Jerusalum Just Like John, and Wade in the Water. Our third performer, backed by the Sunset Four, is Grace Outlaw, whose formal soprano lends a vaudeville touch to Plantation Days and I've Got a Home in that Rock. The final six selections, from 1930, are by the Bessemer Melody Boys of Jefferson County, Alabama. Their more modern sounding selections include Sleep My Mother, In My Father's House, and When I Get Home. Notes by Smithsonian scholar Kip Lornell. (DH)

VARIOUS ARTISTS Document DOCD 5355 The Earliest Negro Vocal Groups, Vol 3 ● CD $15.98
24 tracks, 73 min., recommended
This continuing series now focuses on the varied quartet singing of the Southern Negro Quartette, the Florida Normal and Industrial Institute Quartette, and the Kentucky Trio, all of whom originally recorded for Columbia or its Okeh subsidiary. Sounding like seasoned performers themselves, part of the repertoire of the Southerns is drawn from the vaudeville performances of the "classic" female blues singers, including cross gender numbers like He Took It Away From Me, and My Man Rocks Me. Three of the four numbers by the Florida ensemble are spiritual evergreens such as Dis Train and The Welcome Table. And the Kentucky Trio features an effective female lead and a six song program that is entirely religious in nature. Highlights include Mother's Religion/ God Gonna Set This World on Fire, and Do You Want to Go There. An interesting and enjoyable program, with sound quality that varies considerably, as you might expect. (DH)
FLORIDA NORMAL AND INDUSTRIAL INSTITUTE: Dis Train/ Oh! My Soul Is A Witness/ The Tree/ The Welcome Table/ THE KENTUCKY TRIO: Do You Want To Go There?/ God Gonna Set This World On Fire/ Lord, I Want To Be A Christian/ Mother's Religion/ Shine For Jesus/ The Old Account Was Settled/ SOUTHRN NEGRO QUARTETTE: Anticipatin' Blues/ Gonna Raise Ruckus Tonight/ Hampton Road Blues/ Hard Trials And Great Tribulations/ He Took It Away From Me/ Hey Hey And Hee Hee/ I Ain't Givin' Nothin' Away/ I'll Be Good But I'll Be Lonesome/ I'm Wild About Moonshine/ Lullaby Blues/ Moanin' Groanin' Blues/ My Lord's Gonna Move This Wicked Race/ My Man Rocks Me/ Sweet Mamma

VARIOUS ARTISTS Document 5613 The Earliest Negro Vocal Groups, Vol. 5 : 1911-1926 ● CD $15.98
21 tracks, 72 mins, recommended This collection features 13 tracks from the seminal Fisk University Jubilee Quartette/ Singers complementing the three previously issued albums (Document 5533, 5534, 5535) including 6 tracks from Edison Amberol singers and two items recorded for Starr that are not listed in the discography. Dignified and polished but very moving performances by the group of Shout All Over God's Heaven/ All Over The World/ Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray and others. In addition there are four sides tracks by The Southern 4 (1921), two by the Manhattan Harmony Four (1923) and one by The Morehouse College Quartet (1923) - pleasing performances but lacking the power of the Fisks. Sound quality is frequently rough and this is not for the casual listener but is another important contribution to our understanding of early African-American recordings. (FS)
