Chicago Blues From King/Federal |
● CD $18.98 |
22 tracks, 59 min., recommended
Those of us who follow
R&B reissues know that the Syd Nathan's King label has one of finest
back catalogue. Just in the last one or two years, we've seen reissues of
harmony groups, sax blasters, jump bands, and now, with this set, five
Chicago-based bluesmen who recorded between 1957 and 1962. Collectors
should note that 8 of the tracks are previously unissued legitimately.
Produced by Ralph Bass (1911-1997), and his 1959 replacement Sonny
Thompson, the artists include : Kid Thomas (8), Bobby King (4), Willie
Mabon (4), Smokey Smothers (4), and Eddie Clearwater (2). The 1962
Clearwater track Real Good Time will be familiar to thoss who have
the live Red Rooster CD. Willie Mabon, who's original songs I'm Mad
and I Don't Know are Chicago blues classics, is represented here by
his complete 1957 session which includes 2 unissued sides It's Gonna
Hurt You and Got To Find My Baby. The late Kid Thomas (aka
Louis Thomas Watts) has rarely been reissued, and with his slightly
rock'n'rolly harmonica playing, especially on the unissued Beulah Come
Back (a clever nod to Elvis Presley's hit Too Much) and the
instrumental Jivin' Mess, what you have here is his complete 1957
session (6 unissued) ; a talented bluesmen who died much too young (in
1970, at age 35). If I have one reservation of this CD, it would have been
nice to have a few extra tracks by the late Otis "Smokey"
Smothers. My favorite tracks of his include I've Been Drinking Muddy
Water ('61) and Come On Rock Little Girl ('61), both featuring
Freddie King's lead guitar. Finally, the set contains 4 sides by the
Chicago Westside guitarist Bobby King (1941-1983), the highlight being What
A Day What A Night ('64), which shows off his excellent Fenton
Robinson-style of playing. (EL)
EDDIE CLEARWATER: Hey Bernardine/ Real Good Time/ BOBBY KING: I Want You
To Rock Me/ Two Telephones/ W-A-S-T-E-D/ What A Day What A Night/ WILLIE
MABON: Got To Find My Baby/ It's Gonna Hurt You/ Light Up Your Lamp/
Rosetta Rosetta/ SMOKEY SMOTHERS: Blind And Dumb Man Blues/ Come On Rock
Little Girl/ Hello Little School Girl/ I've Been Drinking Muddy Water/ KID
THOMAS: Beulah Come Back/ Come Here Woman/ Here Is My Story/ Jivin' Mess/
Ride On, Ride On/ The Spell/ Wolf Pack/ You're Fine

Chicago Blues Session, Vol 9 - Teardrops
Blues Jam |
● CD $16.98 |
More intense blues from
the always rewarding Magic Slim and his band The Teardrops. There are 3
fine vocals by Slim himself including a version of Jimi Hendrix's Red
House. Bass player Nick Holt is featured on three vocals - Holt is not
a particularly outstanding singer but Slim and the band give him a solid
backing. John Primer is featured on three cuts including an unexceptional
performance of Freddie King's Sittin' On The Boatdock which is
incorrectly described as Primer original. Finally there are 2 fine songs
from Junior Pettis who worked with Slim in the 70s and early 80s
accompanied by Primer, Holt and Timothy Taylor and one by Earl Howell.

Blue Chicago 5002 |
Clark Street Ramblers - Sweet Home Blue
Chicago |
● CD $16.98 |
13 tracks, 63 mins, highly recommended. This set features
recordings of some of the most popular bluesmen to have played at
Chicago's popular Blue Chicago club on North Clark. Although a lot of the
usual suspects are featured they turn in some particularly fine
performances - Johnny B. Moore does an excellent version of the standard Kokomo
Me Baby and contributes some fine slide guitar to Aron Burton's Nothing.
Michael Coleman has been around a while but his only other recordings are
on Wolf - he is definitely a talent to watch with a soulful voice, a
couple of excellent songs and some great fluid guitar. Veteran tenor
saxist Eddie Shaw's I'm Tired also features some dynamite guitar
from his son Eddie. The set also features Eddy Clearwater, Maurice John
Vaughn, Willie Kent and promising newcomer George Baze. (FS)
